THE PORTRAIT OF PROFESSOR SOLOMON
(2024)
Dir: Debbie Lane
Running Time: 13:26
Synopsis: After a successful expedition, Professor Solomon is more than pleased with his newly acquired specimens. However, with his moral and ethical compass being highly compromised, his less than professional practices are clearly apparent. Take care though Professor, Karma is a bitch, and she will come back to bite you!

THE PORTRAIT OF PROFESSOR SOLOMON is a stop-motion animation created using puppets and hand made sets. The short film was created as a segment of the feature anthology VIDEO SHOP TALES OF TERROR II: LUST & REVENGE, and is therefore only released and available in this film.

As with the previous animations, The Portrait of Professor Solomon was created using cheap and/or found materials, and some existing tools and equipment. The main difference with this main set was the fact it was built using wooden panels as opposed to cardboard boxes, this was due to the size and stability needed. However the bedroom set was still cardboard.

Balsa wood, polymer clay, aluminium wire, scraps of materials, cardboard, and various acrylic paints were the main items needed to build the puppets, props, and set.

The film itself was probably the most challenging animation shoot yet, and has the most outtakes/re-shoots of all the films to date. It still maintains its DIY, glitchy, quirky look, but manages to push the techniques a little further to create what has been described as “Cronenberg meets Aardman” (Singh Lall).
I'm happy with that!
